Experience Gain Per Family is based on per monster kill.
The Total XP Gain is the total gain recieved if all the players kill the same mob at the same time.

Example: In a squad of 8 families, you will get 30% of the normal Experience.
A monster that normally gives 100 Experience points will give you 33.3 XP instead.
