Sometimes called a Patent Log or Screw Log - the taffrail log is dragged from the stern of a vessel to measure the speed or distance traveled during a voyage.
The log consists of a rotator, recording device and governor.
The log line was an ordinary piece of line and was not included with the purchase of the logs.
This log was manufactured by the Lionel Corporation in New York, NY.
