BRIEF HISTORY OF THE NAUTICAL HERITAGE SOCIETY

Organized in 1980, the Society has substantial experience in a variety of projects that support our goal. Those projects include:

1.
Design, building and operation of the Tallship Californian for 18 years.
2.
Restoration of the historic 1913 racing sloop Virginia. We were successful in having her accepted to the National Registry of Historic Vessel.
3.
Created educational program aboard several historic vessels for age groups from 4th grade through university.
4.
Developed "Coastal Awareness Days", A project to enhance awareness throughout coastal communities in California. The program was funded by the California Department of Conservation and thirty seven Coastal Awareness Days were held in twenty two ports.
5.
Conducted over one hundred special waterfront events, such as the California Sesquicentennial "Gold Rush Race" in San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego.
6.
Conducted a nine port festival called "Cargoes and Cultures" to highlight the contributions of our diverse culture to the development of California.
7.
Worked with the U.S. Customs Service in Hawaii, Seattle, Los Angeles and San Diego to celebrate the Bicentennial of the U.S. Customs Service.
8.
Worked with fifteen ports to organize and conduct Harbor Festivals.
9.
Designed educational facilities for the city of Monterey, the city of Sacramento and the city of Long Beach.
